I’ve spent a lot of time looking at the numbers, and I can tell you that the animal coloring book category is one of the biggest and deepest rabbit holes you can dive into. While you technically can make a book or a bundle for literally any animal on the planet, you really need to stop and think about who you’re actually making it for.
I’ve noticed that the biggest mistake people make is going too broad. If you just put out a generic “Dog Coloring Book,” you’re going to get buried by thousands of competitors who have been there for years. The market is saturated, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for you.
My best advice? You need to lean into “cross-niching.” I want you to try smashing two or three ideas together to create something unique that doesn’t have 50,000 search results yet. Instead of just doing a cat book, I’d suggest doing something like “Kawaii Cats Eating Sushi” or “Steampunk Owls in a Library.”
By combining an animal with a specific aesthetic (like Cottagecore or Boho) or a specific activity (like Yoga or Drinking Coffee), you’re speaking to a very specific person. When you find that “sweet spot” where a person’s love for an animal meets their favorite hobby or art style, that is exactly when you start seeing those sales roll in.
